Financial Occupations Club for University Students
Who is in FOCUS?
FOCUS members are students in the School of Human Ecology and are majoring in Consumer Science with an emphasis in Family Financial Planning/Personal Finance. Our program is certified with the CFPTM Board of Standards, which allows us to sit for the Certified Financial Planner exam upon graduation.
The mission of FOCUS is to provide career development for its membership, improve financial literacy
on campus, provide counseling and intervention to fellow students and the surrounding Community, and
promoting the financial planning process.
? What do we do ?
Ø Monthly meetings which have food (of course)
Ø Discussions with Professionals in the financial services industry during semester to learn about the in and outs of the career as a financial planner.
Ø Take one trip per year to Minneapolis, Chicago, or Milwaukee where we visit financial firms for possible summer internships or jobs after graduation.
Ø We host the annual FPA/FOCUS Golf Outing at University Ridge GC, grouping together with financial professionals to help build relationships in the financial trade
Ø We have a peer-2-peer education program for new students called Money Talk$ which is designed as a financial survival skills workshop that covers budgeting, credit cards, and roommates.

Ø Our “Get FOCU$ED” Free Peer Financial Counseling center located at 432 N. Murray St. in the Financial Aid office room 233. There we help members of our campus and community with budgeting issues, credit card debt, and other financial issues. The phone number to our office is 608-262-3847.
Ø We do free income tax preparation in Madison as part of the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistants) Program
Ø New this year to FOCU$ is the Second Chance Workshop. Workshops on credit reports and budgeting are given by FOCU$ members. to families that have had difficulty maintaining housing in the past with case management, education and skills for independent living.
